Community Magic Shows

The Calgary Magic Circle can provide volunteer magicians to perform magic shows for Calgary community groups and facilities. It's a pretty simple arrangement... you bring the audience, we bring the show!

This page lays out some of the requirements that we ask of any community group looking to host a show.

Most importantly, the CMC will not provide a community show to any event that would take away an opportunity for a professional magician. This is not a "free magic show" for anybody who asks. Only groups that would otherwise not be able to bring in professional entertainment will be considered.

This is intended as a chance for amatuer magicians to gain experience performing for a live audience, and we invite any club members to participate. As such, you can expect the performers to be widely varied in skill and experience. From kids to seniors and everything in between. We will certainly try to provide the best show possible, but it must be clearly understood that this is an amateur production.

The CMC does not charge a fee for these shows, but an honorarium is much appreciated. Our club budget goes entirely towards our workshops and events to further grow the experience and knowledge of our members. As a suggestion, an appropriate honorarium for a one-hour magic show might be $75 to $100.

Our performers are volunteers, and we insist that they be treated with the respect that any volunteer deserves. A "free" show is not a "worthless" show. Even something as simple as offering refreshments to the performers goes a long way to making them feel appreciated.

If you feel your group would be appropriate, let's talk about some of the details.

How to host a Community Magic Show

The usual type of show we provide is suitable for a family audience, of all ages. The more information you give us regarding the expected audience, the better suited our volunteer performers will be. Be sure to tell us if it will be just for kids, or only seniors, etc.

The typical audience size would be 20 to 100 people. No special requirements are needed for the venue. Any room with enough chairs will do. If a larger audience requires it, we can provide a PA sound system.

Preferably, you should offer this show as free admission. The only exception is if you would like to make it a small fundraiser, charging no more than $5 per person. It is important that the audience knows it is an amateur show, so we can exceed their expectations.

Send us an email with information about the potential show. Specifically, audience size and demographic, the location, and the date and time. The more you can tell us about your group, the better. We will then find a member willing to organize the show for you, and they will get in touch with you personally.
